Why Melatonin Isn't Working: The Gut Barrier Problem Behind Poor Sleep Quality
Melatonin is the most popular sleep supplement in America. It’s also one of the most commonly reported as “not working.” People take 3mg, then 5mg, then 10mg, chasing the dose that will finally make them sleep. Here’s the biochemical chain: the amino acid tryptophan (from protein in your diet) is converted to serotonin (primarily in the gut), which is then converted to melatonin (primarily in the pineal gland). Address gut lining integrity so tryptophan absorption improves. Reduce gut inflammation so serotonin production normalizes. Support the serotonin-to-melatonin conversion with cofactors like magnesium and vitamin B6.
